The University of the Philippines Cebu served as the host institution for the 18th National Symposium on Marine Science (PAMS18), held on July 10–12, 2025, with the theme “Oceans at a Crossroad: Integrating Science, Policy, and Action for Sustainable Philippine Seas.”

The biennial symposium, organized by the Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS), brought together experts, policymakers, conservationists, and advocates to share knowledge and strengthen linkages in the pursuit of marine sustainability. The 5th Announcement for PAMS18 highlighted updates such as the roster of plenary speakers, registration details, presenter reminders, transport guides, and partnership acknowledgments.

PAMS18 was held in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB), Wildlife Conservation Society Philippines, Zoological Society of London – Philippines, Ocean Energy Pathway, DOST-PCAARRD, Oceana, and the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation (MERF).

A key highlight of the symposium was the presentation of UP President Angelo Jimenez, who introduced the Archipelagic and Oceanic Virtual University (AOVU)—a planned constituent unit of the UP System set to launch in 2026. The AOVU will offer fully online and ladderized postgraduate programs on marine conservation, the blue economy, and archipelagic studies, building on the Philippines’ position as one of the world’s largest archipelagos.

By spotlighting science-policy integration, PAMS18 positioned UP Cebu at the forefront of critical conversations on safeguarding Philippine seas for future generations.
