The first day of FACETS (Faculty Advancement through Curriculum Enhancement and Training for Syllabi) gathered faculty from UP Cebu’s Computer Science and Physical Education programs to review Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) in relation to quality assurance and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in designing and refining course syllabi.
Dr. Patricia Anne G. Nazareno opened the program by linking curriculum development to the SDGs, emphasizing how courses can respond to broader societal needs. Dr. Mary Gretchen F. Chaves introduced the principles of Quality Assurance and highlighted the importance of clear outcomes and consistent standards. Asst. Prof. Sean Policarpio then provided a practical walkthrough on developing OBE-aligned syllabi using the program outcomes of the Computer Science Department as examples.
The sessions also allowed faculty to raise important points on teaching load policies, faculty development, and the continued relevance of General Education (GE) courses in forming well-rounded students. Participants reviewed current student learning experiences and assessed available resources to support their course outcomes, laying the foundation for the hands-on workshops and cliniquing sessions that will follow.
This has set a clear direction for the next sessions, strengthening course design while keeping both program goals and student learning needs at the center.
