The University of the Philippines Cebu, through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, conducted an Academic Program Improvement (API) session on Micro-Credentials on September 24, 2026, at AVR-1, featuring insights from the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU).

The session was led by Asst. Prof. Ria Valerie Cabanes, Program Chair of the Master of Arts in Nursing at UPOU. She shared insights on the principles, frameworks, and strategies for developing and implementing micro-credential programs.

The discussion highlighted the value of stackable micro-credentials in providing flexible and learner-centered educational pathways. Among the benefits discussed were customized learning, incremental qualifications, enhanced marketability, and smoother transitions to further education.

Asst. Prof. Cabanes also presented models used by UPOU and discussed strategies for developing micro-credentials that respond to the evolving needs of learners, industries, and communities.

The initiative forms part of UP Cebu’s continuing efforts to explore innovative approaches to higher education and expand flexible learning opportunities for its learners.
