Stories of struggle, resistance, and remembrance were featured during the 1081 Exhibit Cultural Night, which brought together performances, literary pieces, and discussions on the Martial Law period on Friday, September 18, at the University of the Philippines Cebu Administration Building.
Student dance organizations UP SAYAWE and UP Cebu Iskultura Dance Ensemble presented pieces depicting the atrocities and injustices during Martial Law.
The program also featured literary performances by Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges National Culture and the Arts Festival (PASUC NCAF) finalists Shaila Montillano and Eunice Iglesias.
Speakers Dyan Gumanao of Karapatan Central Visayas, Rhodora M. Bucoy, PhD, and Kisha Maureen Anadia of Safe Spaces Movement discussed the experiences of communities and individuals who endured and resisted oppression during the period.
The event also featured the oath-taking of the editorial board of Lanog, the student publication of the College of Communication, Arts, and Design (CCAD).
The program concluded with a protest action and street mobilization, bringing the cultural night to a close with participants taking the discussion beyond the venue.
Organized by the Communicators of UP, the Cultural Night was part of UP Cebu’s commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.
