1081 Exhibit revisits martial law through art, performance

The annual 1081 Exhibit opened on September 17 at the Performing Arts Hall of the University of the Philippines Cebu, commemorating 54 years since Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law and preceding the Day of Remembrance on September 21.

Carrying this year’s theme, “Ang Kamatuoran Taliwala sa Kangitngit,” the commemoration brings together art, theater, and discussions that revisit the experiences and realities of the Martial Law period.

Project Head Rainne Nocete highlighted the importance of preserving truth and historical memory amid the growing influence of machines, algorithms, and misinformation.

The opening program featured Project Adviser Asst. Prof. Dominic Yasay, labor activist Jhonggie Rumol, and Andres Sugbu Secretary-General Ciel Colina, who took part in discussions on memory, truth, and the continuing relevance of remembering Martial Law.

The program also featured “Pabilong di Maupos,” a play by the UP Students Theater Arts Guild for Education (UPSTAGE) that portrayed the lives of four Martial Law victims and their experiences of abuse, violence, and other atrocities under the dictatorship.

Meanwhile, the Fine Arts Students Association (FASO) presented “Studyante Rako,” a reenactment depicting the torture and repression experienced by students who spoke out and resisted the government.

The commemoration continues at the Jose T. Joya Gallery, where a Multimedia Exhibit presents visual works and installations reflecting on the Martial Law period. The exhibit will be open until September 25.

The 1081 Exhibit has been held annually as a student-led commemoration at UP Cebu, providing a space for the university community to remember Martial Law through creative expression and collective reflection.

The commemoration continues with a series of activities, culminating in a Cultural Night on September 18, ahead of the Day of Remembrance on September 21.
